  • Stop Human Trafficking Today Project

Stop Human Trafficking Today is a project of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. Our team educates the community on the issue of human trafficking by providing workshops and presentations to community members, as well as social service providers and law enforcement. We also provide direct outreach to various communities within our service area to help identify victims of modern day slavery.
  • Victims of Trafficking and Their Needs

There are four general areas of victim needs: * Immediate assistance - Housing, food, medical, safety and security, language interpretation and legal services * Mental health assistance - Counseling * Income assistance - Cash, living assistance * Legal status - T visa, immigration, certification

Victims of human trafficking are vulnerable human beings who have been subjected to severe physical and emotional coercion. Trafficking victims are usually in desperate need of assistance. They need to know that once they come in contact with social service providers and law enforcement, they are safe and will be protected.
  • Choice

You cannot make a choice to be a slave.

Not all victims of human trafficking are undocumented.

Not all victims have crossed international borders.

Upcoming Trainings

NEW IDEA: We are planning to do a training with the colonias community centers in Laredo. We want to gather teenagers together to discuss human trafficking, see what their views of it are, and see what they think is the best way to combat it. In Laredo, it is a tendency for youth to cross the border and never be heard from again. So, we want their input into how we can keep them safe and we want them to learn about the risks that are out there. I will keep you updated!

Next month for sure we are going to Corpus Christi!!!

Off to Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley the coming week to attend a University of Texas Brownsville human trafficking awareness event on June 13th at 5pm. We will then be conducting trainings with Proyecto Juan Diego  in Brownsville, and will be meeting with local police in South Padre Island. We will be interacting with communities in the colonias and hotels on the island to spread the word about human trafficking. We will be doing all of this from June 13t-June 19th 2009!!!

We will be in Austin March 10th at the Airport Hilton speaking for the TAASA 2009 Annual Conference.

We will be training in Del Rio at the local Rotary club on March. 24th, 2009.

We will be training victim advocates at the Rape Crisis Center on March 28th 2009.

We are also looking to form church groups and student groups in the San Antonio area to do block walking through different neighborhoods. The goal is to make sure our community is informed on the various types of human trafficking, and these crimes are occurring right here in our city.

We are planning our next community outreach programs in Corpus Christi and Laredo.
